Using Gojek and Grab in Bali with an eSIM
Gojek and Grab are the two most popular ways to get around Bali — far cheaper and easier than street taxis. But both require a local Indonesian +62 number to sign up. Here's how to get set up quickly.
Why you need a local +62 number
Gojek and Grab both use SMS one-time passwords (OTPs) to verify new accounts. The OTP is sent to your phone number. If you try to register with your home country number (UK, US, Australia, etc.), the verification SMS either doesn't arrive or is blocked.
- SMS OTPs won't work
- Both Gojek and Grab send verification codes by SMS to an Indonesian number. If your number is a UK +44, US +1, or any other non-Indonesian number, the OTP delivery often fails or is blocked.
- Account creation may be rejected
- Gojek's registration system is region-specific. Using a non-Indonesian number can result in an 'invalid number' error at signup.
- In-app payment and promos are IDR-based
- Promotions, vouchers, and GoPay/OVO wallet top-ups are all tied to Indonesian phone accounts. You get access to these only with a real +62 number.
How the Nusio eSIM solves this
The Nusio Bali eSIM includes a real local Indonesian phone number — not just a data-only SIM. When you receive your eSIM QR code and install it, you get a genuine +62 number that receives calls, SMS messages, and OTPs just like any Indonesian mobile number. That means Gojek and Grab registrations work immediately.

Tips for using Gojek and Grab in Bali
- Register and verify your accounts before you leave for Bali. Install the eSIM, receive the OTP, and sign up from home — then you're ready on arrival.
- Add a credit or debit card to both apps before your trip so you don't need to handle cash for every ride.
- Gojek GoRide (motorbike) and GoCar (car) are both available. GoRide is faster in traffic but GoCar is better for luggage and rainy days.
- Always confirm the driver's plate number and name on the app before getting in.
